Development of an Ultra-High Temperature High Pressure Organophilic Clay-Free (OCF) Invert Emulsion Fluid to Reduce Surge and Swab Effects and Pressure Drops Compared with Existing Conventional Clay-Based Invert Emulsion Fluids

An onshore area in the Indonesia “M” field required a drilling fluid for very HPHT formations with mud weights up to 20.0 lbm/gal and temperature 425oF. High pump pressures, high temperature, slow rates of penetration, high equivalent circulation densities (ECD) and sag are all challenges common to these conditions. The solution was to develop an organophilic clay-free (OCF) invert emulsion fluid capable of reducing the pressure drop, lowering rheology, minimizing ECDs, and stabilizing the wellbore over an extended aging period.
