ABD, WEP set world depth record with High Strength Composite Casing

THE NETHERLANDS -- Acquit Business Development (ABD) with Well Engineering Partners (WEP) have developed a High Strength Composite Casing (HSCC) system. The 7”HSCC has been successfully installed covering the oil reservoir from 917 to 5015 in a 5123 m well, which immediately resulted in the world record of deepest HSCC application.

ABD will deliver in the middle of May, the first of a series of 150 m 7" composite, casing to a Middle East customer with the following test results verified by TNO and Technical University Delft. HSCC test results with glued composite to composite connections  and composite to steel  connections revealed, temperature -105 degrees C, burst - 275 bar, collapse - 193 bar, tensile - 118 Kdan and compression - 54 Kdan.

The 7” HSCC  is custom engineered and build for the application and has been thoroughly tested. With its 5-7/8” inner diameter and glued 7.8” coupling, it can be handled with standard rig equipment and easily fits in a regular steel string because of its steel to composite cross-overs.

ABD and WEP are convinced that there are tremendous opportunities in the following markets:

Oil and gas industry:

  • Casing in very corrosive environment such as lost circulation zones, and  in H2S environment as well
  • See Through Logging (STL) through composite casing in order to monitor gas injection flow through the reservoir has been tested and proved by an independent wireline logging company
  • Water injection wells, no corrosion and no scaling, no bacterial influence
  • Long horizontal wells of less than 3000 m depth
  • Drilling with small rigs from a platform or in city parks or parking lots

Salt Industry:

  • Cavern measurement requires steel casing to be removed, whereas with composite casing the measurements can be done through the composite pipe, STL
  • No corrosion
  • No scaling

Renewable Geothermal Energy:

  • Less pressure drop
  • Good thermal isolation
  • No corrosion
  • No scaling or pipe dope
  • Low weights allowing smaller rigs to be used drilling in city parks or parking lots
