ExxonMobil begins appraisal drilling at Lau-Lau oil discovery in Stabroek block offshore Guyana
(WO) – According to the Guyana Times, ExxonMobil has started appraisal drilling at its Lau-Lau 2 well site in the prolific Stabroek Block offshore Guyana, where it had previously discovered over 300 ft of oil at the Lau-Lau 1 well. The Maritime Administration Department announced that this appraisal, conducted by the drillship MODU Noble Sam Croft, will run from June 16 to July 31, 2024.
The Lau-Lau 1 and Fangtooth-1 oil discoveries in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana were announced in January 2022, marking the 27th discovery in the block at that time. The Lau-Lau 1 well had a 315-ft oil reservoir, and Fangtooth-1 had a 164-foot oil reservoir.
According to several sources, Westwood Global Energy Group thinks the offshore discovery holds over 100 MMboe. He Guyana finds are located approximately 42 miles southeast of Exxon’s Liza field.
These discoveries enhanced ExxonMobil's resource estimates and understanding of the block. Mike Cousins, ExxonMobil's Senior Vice President, emphasized the positive implications for Guyana's growing oil and gas sector and noted the potential for up to 10 development projects.
Lau-Lau 2 is part of ExxonMobil's broader exploration program, which includes other wells such as Haimara 3 and 4, Trumpetfish-1, and Bluefin-1. The Stabroek Block has seen over 30 oil discoveries since 2015, and significant gas reserves have also been identified, totaling 17 Tcf.
