Geothermal operators are facing several technical challenges that need to be tackled to ensure that geothermal wells are reliable on the long-run and optimized in terms of heat supply efficiency. The premium solutions (material, grades and services) that have been used for decades in Oil & Gas activities show promising results in enhancing geothermal wells’ reliability and performance. However, specific evaluations need to be performed to guarantee their compatibility. In this webcast, Maximilien De Maisonneuve and François Penven, in charge of the Geothermal division at Vallourec, will introduce how available technologies at Vallourec can help geothermal operators meet challenging scenarios as well as to ensure their projects’ cost effectiveness. These solutions will be illustrated by some real business cases. Finally, the speakers will also shed some light on what the future of tubular solutions could look like for the next generation of geothermal wells.

The biggest challenge operators are facing today is the bottleneck at the shakers, the ability to drill faster and the shakers’ ability to keep up with the drill rates, also for those shakers to retain as much of the expensive drilling fluid as possible while keeping those fluids out of the waste stream. The MONGOOSE Max high-capacity shaker is the latest advancement in shakers, significantly increasing solids and fluid handling capacity by 35%, and fluid recovery by 40%. With the integration of the new vacuum technology, the overall oil on cuttings by weight average is 10% over the more than 18% with third-party shakers. The whole mud on cuttings is reduced by up to 40%, with the discarded solids passing 99% of the US EPA Paint Filter Liquids Test 9095B and lowering the solids waste stream by 25%.

As our industry transitions over the coming years toward fully decarbonized energy, we will be facing the imperative of answering the demand for conventional energy with new priorities on capital stewardship, increased productivity, and greater environmental sustainability. Investing billions of dollars in large new greenfield developments will become more and more difficult to justify. Operators will turn to their existing assets to connect additional resources and extract more oil and gas from them, with the priority on projects with low breakeven, low carbon, and short payback. Electrification of production systems will provide answers for this situation. But while operators fully understand the value of electrification for greenfield developments, its benefit for existing mature fields is less well known. This webcast will focus on the benefits of electrification for wells, subsea, and topside in brownfield applications. During this discussion, we will expand on the new capabilities enabled by electric systems that will help push existing frontiers. In addition, we will address some beliefs and myths and demonstrate that incremental investment costs for electrification of existing fields can return a large value while reducing the carbon footprint of our industry.

Integration of edge computers with real-time process control data is important for users who want to implement analysis and advanced data processing in the field. Traditionally, edge computers are a separate device that must be integrated with controllers and flow computers. Custom applications can be run on the edge computer that will allow for highly advanced real-time analysis of the field measurements, however building an edge environment and integrating data can be a non-trivial task.
