IRVING, Texas (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. said the U.S. government is giving the company more time to shut its Russian Arctic well beyond the deadline for sanctions aimed at halting the $700 million project. Exxon asked Washington for an extension to allow it to continue performing shut-down work on the Universitetskaya-1 (University-1) well in Russia’s Kara Sea to make sure the well was safe before it’s temporarily abandoned. The Irving, Texas- based company already had ceased drilling the offshore well after U.S. sanctions set a Sept. 26 deadline for ending the work.

IRVING, Texas (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. and OAO Rosneft halted drilling on an offshore oil well intended as the first step in unlocking billions of barrels of crude in Russia’s remote Arctic, according to people familiar with the project. Work stopped just a few days after the U.S. and European Union barred companies from helping Russia exploit Arctic, deepwater or shale-oil fields, said three people with knowledge of the rig’s operations who asked not to be named since they weren’t authorized to speak about the project.

STAVANGER, Norway -- Statoil will lay up the COSL Pioneer rig in fourth-quarter 2014 due to overcapacity in its rig portfolio. The rig is currently carrying out an assignment on the Visund field and is scheduled to complete this work at the end of September. In July, Statoil also announced that the drilling rig Scarabeo 5 would be temporarily suspended.

MILAN -- Eni has made a new oil discovery in Block 15/06, in the Ochigufu exploration prospect, in deep water offshore Angola. Oghigufu is the tenth commercial oil discovery made in Block 15/06. The discovery is estimated to contain 300 MMbbl of oil in place. The Ochigufu 1 NFW well, which has led to the discovery, will be brought into production in record time. The well is located approximately 150 km off the coast and 9.8 km from the Ngoma FPSO (West Hub).

SINGAPORE -- Keppel FELS Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine, has secured a contract from Gulf Drilling International (GDI) of Qatar to build a repeat high-specification KFELS B Class jackup rig worth $227 million. As part of the contract, GDI has options for two more KFELS B Class rigs for deliveries in 2017.

LONDON -- Ophir Energy's Silenus East-1 well in Block R, offshore Equatorial Guinea, has resulted in a new gas discovery. The Silenus East-1 well was drilled by the Vantage Titanium Explorer drillship within the thrust belt area of Block R. A 67-m gross gas column was encountered in the primary target with high quality reservoir in line with pre-drill expectations.

HOUSTON -- McDermott International has announce the successful completion of its subsea contract for Chevron's Jack and St. Malo project. The project involved the installation of jumpers, flying leads, subsea pump stations, umbilicals and subsea landing of some of the industry’s largest and complex umbilical end terminations to a host floating production platform in 7,200 ft of water 279 mi offshore Louisiana.

TORSHAVN, Faroe Islands -- Atlantic Petroleum has reported that drilling, LWD and wireline logging information indicates the presence of gas in the 43/13b-7 well. Following the analysis of cores and all other available data, the P1724 JV has decided to drill stem test the well. The well is operated by Centrica Energy (55% interest in the licence).

IRVING, Texas (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp.’s work on a $700 million Arctic well in Russia could be stopped before it’s finished under new U.S. and European Union sanctions that outlaw the drilling partnership. New sanctions ban U.S. and EU companies from working with Russian officials or companies to find or produce crude from deep seas, shale fields or the Arctic. The decrees, reported earlier this week by Bloomberg, were imposed Sept. 12, the 35th day of drilling at the 9 Bbbl Universitetskaya prospect off Russia’s northern coast that was scheduled to last for 70 days.
